India Asean Weaving Textile
Relations (The Fabric Show)

Held on the 23rd of January, 2018, the Fabric Show also hosted the unveiling of the coffee table book, India-ASEAN: Weaving Relationships, by Smt. Smriti Irani, Hon’ble Textile Minister, Government of India. The book was researched, authored and edited by Kaveri Mukherji.

The Indian subcontinent and the entire South-East Asian Region have been intertwined through centuries of contact between the peoples of this ancient land. Underwriting the more recent Government-to-Government and business–to-business relations, there is the firm foundation of many centuries of people-to-people contact, with culture and economics amply benefiting both regions.

There is much richness in the designs and textures of fabrics woven in India and ASEAN and this cannot be matched anywhere else in the world. The handwoven silks and cottons of the region still remain exquisite in quality.

The Show was presented through all the eleven ASEAN nations; as it unfolded, we observed much similarity between their textiles and weaves. It was a story of people through the centuries, connecting lives across thousands of miles. A common cultural threads runs through the entire Indian sub-continent and the ASEAN region which was brought out gracefully in the textile presentation of each country.
